Call It What You Want

Foster the People is known for their indie style of music. Their song “Pumped Up Kicks” became a huge hit in the music industry, rocketing them off to fame.

The song “Call It What You Want” analyzes the need to fit in with society. People these days are always caught up in what the latest trend or fads are; this song is about letting go of what’s popular and thinking for yourself. “‘Cause I gotta keep myself free” is stating that the speaker doesn’t want to be a part of other people’s problems anymore, they don’t want to be restricted by other people’s conflicts.

In class we listened to a person speak about what “it” necessarily is. “It” is always so vague and ambiguous. In this song, “it” is whatever you want it to be. Whether it be fashion, style, quirks, etc. Call it whatever you want; it doesn’t matter to me because I’m going to have my own opinion and you may have a different opinion, but that’s okay.

  1. In the beginning of their music video for Call It What You Want, the idiom “Idle minds are the devil’s workshop” flashed on the screen. Loved your post. Great job, Belle! 🙂
